As a newborn photographer in Davenport, this is the number one question I get.
“What if my baby won’t sleep?”
It’s one of the most common things I hear. And I get it.
As a newborn photographer in the Quad Cities, I’ve worked with all kinds of babies. Deep sleepers, light sleepers, and babies who stay wide awake the whole time.
Here’s what you need to know.

Most people picture those curled-up, sleepy poses. But that’s not the only way to get great photos.
Awake images can be just as beautiful. Sometimes even more so.
This is where experience matters.
If your baby isn’t sleeping, I adjust. No stress, no rushing.
I might keep baby wrapped up. A lot of babies feel safer that way. I slow things down and give baby time to settle. I focus on photos with you, your partner, or siblings.
You don’t need to bring in a “perfect” baby. That’s not your job. It’s mine.

Some babies startle easily when unwrapped. Some just feel more settled when they’re cozy and wrapped up. That’s completely normal.
If your baby prefers to stay wrapped, we go with that. You still get a full gallery.
There are no guarantees. Babies do what they want. But these things can help.
Feed baby right before you leave. A full baby is a sleepy baby. Try to hit that drowsy, milk-drunk stage before heading over.
Keep baby awake a little beforehand. Even 30 to 60 minutes of awake time can help. Give them a bath or some interaction. That way they’re ready to sleep when the session starts.
Dress baby in something easy to remove. Zip sleepers work great. Skip onesies that go over the head. Fewer layers means less chance of waking baby up.
Try to stay relaxed. Babies pick up on stress. The calmer you are, the easier things tend to go.
Even with all of this, some babies still want to stay awake. That’s okay too.
I plan for this.
Sessions have built-in time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. We’re not rushing. There’s room for your baby to just be a baby.

If you’re booking a newborn photographer in Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, or Rock Island, your session should feel calm, not stressful.
In my studio, sessions are baby-led. We follow your baby’s cues. We start with family and sibling photos. That way younger kids don’t have to stay the whole time. Then we move into baby-only images.

Yes. Some of my favorite images are from babies who were wide awake.
You get eye contact. You get personality. You get real moments.
Most galleries end up with a mix of awake and sleepy images anyway.

If you’re worried about your baby not sleeping, the most important thing isn’t whether they sleep.
It’s who you hire.
Look for someone who has worked with all kinds of babies. Someone who doesn’t follow a rigid script. Someone who can adapt.
Your baby doesn’t need to perform. Your photographer does.
I photograph newborns in my Davenport studio. I serve families from Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, and the surrounding area.
Sessions are best scheduled within the first 5 to 21 days after birth. I hold spots based on due dates, so it’s worth reaching out before baby arrives.

A lot of parents wonder what the session actually looks like. Here’s how it usually goes.
We start with family and sibling photos. This part takes about 45 minutes or so. Getting the group shots done first means younger kids can head home early. They don’t have to sit through the whole thing.
After that, we move into baby-only images. We start with naked fabric poses. I try to get at least two of these. Then we move into wrapped poses, a bucket pose, and a bed pose.
That’s it. Simple, calm, and baby-led the whole way through.
Sessions are not rushed. If baby needs to eat or be changed, we stop and take care of that. There’s time built in for all of it.

What if my baby won’t sleep during the session? That’s okay. I adjust using wrapped poses, slower pacing, and natural positions to still get beautiful images.
Do newborn photos require the baby to be asleep? No. Awake images can be just as meaningful. Most galleries include a mix of both.
How do I make my baby sleepy for photos? Feed baby right before you leave. A full baby is more likely to sleep.
What age is best for newborn photos? Most sessions happen between 5 and 21 days old. Babies are sleepier and easier to pose at that age.
Can siblings be in the photos? Yes. We do family and sibling photos at the start of the session. That way siblings don’t have to stay the whole time.
When should I book my newborn session? Book before your baby arrives. Most photographers, including me, hold spots based on due dates. Spaces fill up fast, and booking early means you’re not scrambling after baby comes.
What if my baby arrives early or late? That happens all the time. I build flexibility into my schedule around due dates. Once baby arrives, reach out and we’ll set your official date from there.
How long does a newborn session take? Most sessions run about one to three hours. That includes time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. We’re never rushing.
How many photos will I get? That varies by photographer. Ask before you book so you know what to expect. I’m happy to answer that question for you directly.
Is the studio warm enough for a newborn? Yes. The studio is kept warm so baby stays comfortable during naked poses. You might want to dress in layers so you’re comfortable too.
Do I need to do anything to prepare? Not much. Feed baby before you leave, pack your bag the night before, and try to relax. I’ll take care of the rest.

Thank you so much for your interest in hiring me as your Quad City Photographer. My time is limited each month so it's never to early to inquire. I look forward to chatting with you!
